About Us

An ethical butcher built on quality and transparency

Carnist was built on a simple belief - great meat should come from animals raised with care, farmers who respect the land, and practices that value quality over shortcuts.

Ethical sourcing, thoughtful butchery, better food

Everything we do is guided by respect - for the animals we source, the farmers we partner with, and the community we serve. Our approach focuses on humane practices, sustainability, and quality from farm to table.
Ethical sourcing
We partner directly with local BC farms that raise animals humanely and care for the land, ensuring responsible practices from the very start.
Whole animal
We use every part of the animal to reduce waste, improve sustainability, and deliver the highest quality cuts and house-made products.
Local impact
By sourcing locally and working directly with farmers, we support small producers, reduce food miles, and strengthen our community food system.

Where does your meat come from?
All of our meat comes from trusted local BC farms that raise animals humanely using sustainable, pasture-based practices.
What does “ethical meat” mean?
For us, it means animals are raised with care, given space to live naturally, and never treated with added hormones or routine antibiotics.
Do you use the whole animal?
Yes. We practice whole-animal butchery, meaning every part is thoughtfully used to reduce waste and honor the animal.
Is your meat grass-fed and pasture-raised?
Most of our beef and lamb are grass-fed and pasture-raised, and we work closely with farmers to ensure high animal welfare standards across all meats.
Why is ethical meat sometimes more expensive?
Ethical farming focuses on animal welfare, sustainability, and quality over mass production, which results in better meat but higher production costs.
Do you use hormones or antibiotics?
No added hormones and no routine antibiotics are used in the animals we source, unless medically necessary for animal health.
Does your selection change?
Yes. Our offerings vary based on the seasons and the farms we work with, ensuring freshness and responsible sourcing.
Can I request specific cuts or bulk orders?
Absolutely. Our team is happy to help with special requests and larger orders when available.
